Our History
Mount Wesley United Methodist Church is a small but active congregation located in the community of Scrabble in the eastern part of Berkeley County, West Virginia, near Martinsburg, WV and Shepherdstown (Jefferson County, WV.
Methodism has been thriving in the Scrabble community since 1778 when "Class Meetings" were held in various homes in the area. In 1834 the first frame church building was built on the current location. In 1839 a "new square brick Church" was built on the site of the frame church. On August 26, 1918 a tornado touched down and destroyed the 1839 Church, with only the pews and piano standing among the rubble. In 1919 construction was started on the present church. It was built in the shape of a cross and was used as a standard of the denomination as an architectural model for the next 19 years.
